One of Broadway's most iconic musicals, Aladdin, had its South Korean premiere on Nov. 22, 2024, at the Charlotte Theater, where it will run until June 25, 2025. The production was overseen by the creators of the original Broadway show, including director and choreographer Casey Nicholaw, Executive Vice President of the Disney Theatrical Group Anne Quart, and composer Alan Menken.

On Dec. 21, 2024, I had the chance to see the Korean version of Aladdin, a musical I've longed to see since the animated film has been my all-time favorite since childhood. Upon arriving at the theater, I was struck by the meticulous details that tied everything to the Aladdin theme, with purple decorations setting the tone. The photo zone with a giant magic lamp drew the most attention, and there was a wide array of merchandise, including the original soundtrack CD and a magic carpet blanket.

The musical was divided into two parts with a short interval in between. Among the most memorable moments was the scene in the magical Cave of Wonders in the desert. It stood out because of the stunning scenery and the actor playing the Genie, who delivered a hilarious rendition of Friend Like Me. His performance, along with the dancers and vibrant costumes, made the scene unforgettable. Another breathtaking moment was the magic carpet ride with “A Whole New World.” To truly appreciate the beauty of this scene, it’s something you have to experience for yourself.

Throughout the play, I was mesmerized by the actors’ performances and their angelic voices. The orchestra was equally outstanding. The musical featured songs from the original animated movie, as well as new songs created specifically for the stage production. I was constantly surprised by the unexpected special effects, particularly during the Genie’s entrance, which left me in awe. I highly recommend this musical to everyone. It offers an unforgettable experience in Seoul that will leave you, like me, speechless as you discover a whole new world.
