March in Hong Kong is "Art Month," with many related events including those by Art Central and Art Basel.
One exhibition at the gallery Commaa features the work of Korean illustrator Lee Min-kyung, aka Drawing Mary. Running until April 24, "How is Your Day?" is the artist's second Hong Kong exhibition.
Graduating from Hansung University in Seoul with a degree in animation, Lee has had her acrylic and digital art shown at Korea's major galleries and collaborated with brands like Casetify and Hoegaarden. She also created the Merry series, the nation's first acrylic coloring book.
The following are excerpts from an email interview with Lee on March 24.

Explain your daily life and creative process.
I spend most of my time in the studio with a tight schedule due to upcoming exhibitions. But I find working alone most comfortable and enjoyable. While painting one day, I felt an especially pleasant sensation and had a strong desire to share that feeling with others. That's how the concept of "painting joy" began. When my work resonated with people, their response brought me even more joy, making these moments more meaningful.
Describe your return to Hong Kong.
Though I couldn't attend my first exhibition due to the pandemic, Hong Kong's support for my work never wavered. I love the city's unique landscape and the warmth of its people, which reminds me of Korea.

What inspired your pet portrait campaign and what brings you joy as an artist?
Noticing Hong Kong residents' deep affection for their pets, I wanted to explore different versions of the relationship between my characters through commissioned portraits. It brought me joy to paint imagination and share it with others who connect with my work. I find warmth both in watching people come together and enjoying moments of solitude, which probably stems from my shy personality.
