Honor guards of the Ministry of National Defense on the morning of April 10 carry the remains of pro-independence activist Hwang Ki-hwan in a casket at a repatriation ceremony held at Terminal 2 of Incheon International Airport. Hwang worked to restore national sovereignty as a diplomat for the Korean Provisional Government in Europe and the U.S., and his remains were returned to his motherland a century after his burial at Mount Olivet Cemetery in New York. While studying in the U.S., Hwang enlisted in the U.S. Army during World War I and died in April 1923.
Eugene Choi, the protagonist of the hit drama "Mr. Sunshine" played by actor Lee Byung-hun, was inspired by Hwang and his journey in Korea's independence movement. Hwang's remains in the afternoon were buried at a section for people of merit who fought for liberation at Daejeon National Cemetery.
