Hwasun Mine, the nation's first coal mine, was permanently closed on June 30. Miners sing "The Miner's Song" (Gwangbuga) in the morning at the mine run by the government-run Korea Coal Corp. in Dong-myeon Township of Hwasun-gun County, Jeollanam-do Province. Opened in 1905, the mine was the leading coal producer in the country's southern region over the past 118 years.
