A team of high school seniors has come in fourth place at the 8th International Earth Science Olympiad (IESO).

The science event, held over eight days from September 22 to 30 in Santander, Spain, involved 82 students from 26 countries. The participants showed off their creativity and inquiry skills in science.

Representing Korea, the four young scientists, Kim Jae-yeon of Uijeongbu High School, Kim Tae-yoon of Incheon Science High School, Sohn Young-oh of Korean Minjok Leadership Academy and Choi Yoon-sung of Daegu Science High School, competed with their international counterparts and they each won a medal.

With Kim Jae-yeon earning a gold medal and the others winning a silver medal each, the team captured fourth place overall at the competition.

The first prize of the competition went to Taiwan, a country that grabbed three gold and one silver medals in total. Japan followed, with three gold medals and one bronze medal. Following Japan was Thailand, which ranked third with two gold and two silver medals.

The IESO competition was launched in 2007 in Korea and marked its eighth run this year.

“The IESO event will and should keep running, as it helps us all to discover and foster a new generation of talent in earth sciences who will contribute to the future of earth sciences and help to deal with any issues in that regard,” said an official from the Ministry of Science, IT & Future Planning.
