“Not only is much of Seoul blanketed in free wireless Internet, but that Internet is much, much faster than what you typically get in the U.S.”

The U.S. business and technology news website Business Insider reported as such in its May 17 article, “Internet speeds in South Korea really do blow away the rest of the world.”

Business Insider writer Steve Kovach compares Internet speeds in Seoul and in his hometown of New York. The test shows that the download speed he got using free WiFi at a café in Seoul was 47.73 Mbps (top), while the one in his Manhattan apartment is much lower, reaching only 16.05 Mbps (bottom).

The test shows that the download speed he got using free WiFi at a café in Seoul was 47.73 Mbps (top), while the one in his Manhattan apartment is much lower, reaching only 16.05 Mbps (bottom).

The author of the piece, Steve Kovach, conducted an Internet speed test at a coffee shop in Seoul to see firsthand how fast it could be.

"The download speed, at 47 megabits per second (Mbps), is at least five times faster than the typical download speed with my Manhattan apartment's cable connection," he wrote. "My connection in Korea let me download at nearly 6 Mbps. That's fast enough to download two MP3 songs in a second.”

The report also quoted statistics from Akamai Technologies, a cloud services provider, which studies the world’s average Internet speeds. It said that Korea topped all others, recording 22.1 Mbps, followed by Japan, Hong Kong, the Netherlands and Switzerland. The Unites States ranked eighth, with 9.8 Mbps.

Akamai Technologies’ statistics show that Korea outshines other countries from around the world when it comes to average Internet speed.
