Korea won second place at the ninth International Earth Science Olympiad (IESO).
Ninety-seven students from 25 countries competed over nine days at the Olympiad starting on Sept. 13 in Poços de Caldas, Brazil. Team Korea won two gold medals and two silver medals, winning second place in the competition. Taiwan came in first place and Indonesia placed third at the Olympiad.
Jung Seung-won, a student from the Gyeonggi Science High School for the Gifted, received a gold medal as Best Individual at the competition.

The IESO, launched in 2007, is a competition aimed at increasing understanding of earth science, a discipline that includes everything from astronomy and geology through to oceanography and atmospheric sciences.
