The Korean Agency for Technology and Standards (KATS), affiliated under the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE), on Feb 22 said it has published international standards for a “Net Zero” energy implementation guide for the first time.

Net zero energy, which means that the amount of energy in a system becomes "zero" due to the equalization of energy consumed and renewable energy produced, is the key to realizing carbon neutrality.

The guide suggests principals such as a net zero energy range and base year, energy efficiency management and renewable energy application for businesses’ activities at their factories and buildings.

As it was established amid active moves to set international standards for the industrial environment, it is expected that the guide could become a net zero energy roadmap for businesses in implementing carbon neutrality.

KATS's director general of bureau of standards policy Oh Kwang hae said, "We proposed this standard to companies to efficiently manage energy through net zero policies and ultimately provide a guide to achieving carbon neutrality,” adding, “As the importance of energy management efficiency is emphasized in achieving carbon neutrality in the future, we will continue to promote activities for standardization and the spread of standards in related fields such as energy reduction and carbon-free fuel use.”
