A domestically developed platform for smart city management has been made an international standard.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport said its real-time event monitoring and integrated management of a smart city platform received the designation on Sept. 15 from the International Telecommunication Union's Telecommunication Standardization Sector Study Group 20.

The platform is an urban management system with functions for collecting, analyzing, using and monitoring city data. It processes real-time data on situations based on time and location to boost the provision of urban services and visualizes situational information to help officials respond swiftly and effectively to a disaster or emergency.

Since 2015, the ministry has developed such a platform to manage urban situations by connecting and using information systems on areas like crime and disaster prevention and education.

The technology is being used by 108 local government units in Korea and in countries like the Philippines, China, Indonesia and Turkiye (Turkey).

Yoon Jong Bin, director for the ministry's Urban Economy Division, said, "This international standardization will boost interoperability among world cities and act as a bridgehead for leading domestic companies in the smart city sector to enter overseas markets."
