A Korean is the new chairperson of an international body for the global standardization of displays.

The Korean Agency for Technology and Standards (KATS), an affiliate of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources, on April 20 said Lee Chang-hee, chief technology officer of Samsung Display, was elected to head the International Electrotechnical Commission's Technical Committee 110.

Korea has led seven of the committee's nine working groups and gained recognition for its technical expertise, but Lee is the first Korean to head the committee.

Lee, who has spent the last 20 years developing and standardizing display technology, was elected after an intense competition with a Chinese candidate.

With his six-year term to start in October, Lee will play a leading role in setting the direction for global display standards and reaching consensus among committee member states.

"The election of this chairperson will further boost Korea's competitiveness in global standards," KATS said. "We plan to keep supporting domestic companies in their international standardization activities."
