White forsythia, a rare plant that grows nowhere but in Korea, decorates the royal garden of Bhutan. Bhutan is a kingdom located in the alpine region of the Himalayan Mountains at an altitude of 2,500 meters.
The plant got its Korean name, “Miseon namu” because its fruit is shaped like a round fan. People grow white forsythia for ornamental purposes thanks to its beautiful flower and scent.
A farm and plant research center that grows white forsythia in Goesan-gun (county), Chungcheongbuk-do (North Chungcheong Province), learnt earlier this year that the kingdom hoped to grow white forsythia to decorate its royal garden. The farm owner and chief of research, Kim Byungjun, sent 40 seedlings of the plant, not the seeds, to Bhutan this February, because the plant has difficulties in sprouting seeds. Thanks to the idea, the seedlings successfully produced flowers in March after being moved to Bhutan.

The farm owner received an email from an official of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forests in Bhutan this August. In the email, the Coordinator of the Royal Project Coordination Office at the ministry, Karma Tenzin, expressed gratitude with photos of the plants growing in the royal garden.
The official said in the email, “We have been creating the royal garden for two years. Seedlings of white forsythia are in full bloom. The beautiful scent and flowers of the plant please everyone.”
The attached photos show the white forsythia plants that produce flowers. Some pictures show the leaves that turned red. The royal garden of the Kingdom of Bhutan is surrounded on all sides by mountains.
The Bhutanese official said, “Some of the seedlings are planted on the earth. The others will be planted later after being grown in the flowerpots. Its flower made people happy and intrigued.” The official also hinted at the possibility of importing additional seedlings.
Kim said, “Thanks to the white forsythia, I heard that the royal family of the Bhutan Kingdom hopes to invite me next year. This plant grows in three areas in Goesan County. I will make effort to introduce white forsythia to the world.”
