A new sign was put up on March 23 in a park in central Dresden, the capital city of the Free State of Saxony in Germany. The sign says, “Koreanischer Platz,” meaning, "Korean Plaza," in German. The new city park was built by the City Government of Dresden in order to symbolize the friendship and cooperation between Korea and the city of Dresden.
A ceremony was held on March 23 to mark the opening of the park. Attendees included Korean Ambassador to Germany Kim Jae-Shin and Mayor of Dresden Helma Orosz.
“Naming this the Korean Plaza contains hope for the unification of the Korean Peninsula. This event will also raise ever more interest in Dresden among the Korean people,” said Ambassador Kim in his congratulatory speech.
The Korean Honorary Consulate in Dresden Christoph Hollenders said that he is, “so proud of this event, like a child.”

Dresden's Korean Plaza is a 1,750-square meter green space for the citizens of the Saxon capital. It is within walking distance of the Zwinger Palace, one of the most popular tourist attractions in Dresden. The park is also easily accessible, as it is located near a subway station.
The concept for a Korean Plaza began when President Park Geun-hye made a state visit to Germany in March last year. It finally came to fruition after going through the necessary procedures, including having the municipal assembly agree to the plan.
“In Germany, there are many streets named after foreign cities. Using the name of a specific country, however, is very rare. The opening of the Korean Plaza holds significance as this year marks the 25th anniversary of the unification of Germany and the 70th year of separation on the Korean Peninsula," said the City of Dresden in a statement.
