Prime Minister Lee Nak-yon commemorated Memorial Day on June 6 by expressing his gratefulness to a Korean War veteran with a deep bow.
The prime minister visited and thanked Kim Mong-ik, a 96-year-old Korean War veteran who served as an agent in the Korea Liaison Office (KLO), a secret intelligence unit that didn't give military serial numbers nor ranks to its agents. Kim conducted many missions, even after being injured.
“People like you who served as soldiers for generations are true patriots,” said the prime minister. “I will serve patriots and veterans like you as well as I can.”
Kim’s eldest son also served in the army and was honorably discharged as a major.
Kim told many stories of his experiences during the Korean War. He said, “I left my hometown to serve Korea. North and South must unite.”
