A special event on Facebook run by the Korean Culture and Information Service (KOCIS), part of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, to promote the upcoming 2018 Inter-Korean Summit has garnered 838 comments of hope and support in 43 languages from all around the world.
The event, held via the Korea Clickers profile, Korea.net’s official Facebook presence, asked users in all countries, “What do you look forward to concerning the 2018 Inter-Korean Summit?” After just one week, from April 5 to 11, comments and replies have flooded in from the Americas, Europe, Asia and Africa.
The comments ranged from Gujarati, Nepali, Tagalog, Marathi, Malayalam and Malay all the way to Bengali, Sindhi, Urdu, Igbo, Italian, Tamil, Telugu, Persian, Hebrew and Hindi. Some were in Korean, too.
Supporters sent words of hope. One comment in Indonesian said, “I hope the Inter-Korean Summit will bring a new ray of hope to Korea and the whole world. As cherry blossoms come in the spring, I hope peace will come around the world.” In Arabic, one commenter said, “My wish is that peace and love will be the language for both Koreas, and a mutual understanding be the unified flag, and that the two Koreans will sing a song of joy and unity under this blue sky together.” In Malayalam, one person said, “We’ll see a spring come to the Korean Peninsula, which we’ll never forget, and a new history will be written on April 27 at Panmunjeom.” In Malay, another person said, “I hope that South and North Korea will be united forever and build a good relationship.”
Some of these messages will be turned into artwork and exhibited in the lobby in front of both Exhibition Hall 2 and 3 at the KINTEX convention center in Goyang-si, Gyeonggi-do Province, from April 25 to 27.
Meanwhile, a second event is currently underway via the same Korea Clickers Facebook profile (
https://www.facebook.com/KoreaClickers). It asks participants to upload a photo or a video taken by themselves of somewhere like Panmunjeom, Imjingak or the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), along with comments of hope.
“This intense interest in our Facebook events comes from people all around the world who see this upcoming summit as an important milestone for peace, not only for the peninsula, but also for the whole world,” said KOCIS Director Kim Tae-hoon.
“Hopefully these special events will allow people all over the world, who desire peace, to share their thoughts and hope.”
Comments posted at the two events will keep being updated at the official Inter-Korean Summit website, below.
