European media have held interviews with epidemiologists in Korea on coping with the coronavirus pandemic.

AFP of France, in its April 7 article "Two South Koreans Recover From Coronavirus After Plasma Therapy," said two infected patients were cured of COVID-19 after being injected with plasma from those who recovered from the disease.

Dr. Choi Jun-yong, chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases at Severance Hospital in Seoul who treated the recovered patients, was quoted as saying, "(Plasma therapy) is an alternative treatment for patients in critical condition who do not respond to antiviral drugs."

He added that large-scale clinical trials are needed to prove the therapy's effectiveness.

The German news blog Freie Welt on April 7 carried an interview with a doctor at Korea University Guro Hospital in the article "Professor Kim Woo-joo from South Korea: Wearing protective masks contributed to the success of virus control in Asia." Kim said even conventional masks can dramatically reduce the risk of COVID-19 infection.

Though the U.S., Europe and the World Health Organization say wearing masks is not important, the doctor said Asia is aware of the importance of mask wearing through the MERS epidemic of 2015, adding that Korea and China have controlled COVID-19 through the widespread use of protective masks.
