The first panda cub born in Korea has received the name Fu Bao, meaning "a treasure that brings happiness." She was born this year on July 20.
Samsung C&T Resort Group, which owns Everland, the theme park where the cub and her parents live, on Nov. 4 said its regular customers from Sept. 22 to Oct. 11 voted through social media for the panda's name, resulting in the selection of Fu Bao.
Around 17,000 of the estimated 50,000 people who voted chose the name.
The reasons cited for selecting Fu Bao included "It matches well with the adorable and round baby panda"; "It's a perfect fit for a panda that rolled in like good luck amid a bad crisis"; and "I wish for an infinite amount of luck."
Fu Bao is the first offspring of mother Ai Bao (born in 2013) and father Le Bao (2012), two giant pandas brought to Korea in March 2016 by Chinese President Xi Jinping to symbolize friendly bilateral ties.
The cub marked her 100th day of life on Oct. 28. Since weighing 197 g and being 16.5 cm tall at birth, Fu Bao now has a weight of 5.8 kg (up 30-fold) and height of 58.5 cm (a 360% rise).
Pandas are born prematurely at a weight of 200 g, giving them a low survival rate in the early stage. The custom is to give a cub a Chinese name some 100 days after its birth when its health stabilizes.
Everland has released a five-minute YouTube video showing Fu Bao's growth over her first 100 days of life.
The theme park's zoo plans to get the cub adjusted to her external environment once Fu Bao has grown more and can walk alone. Her public debut could come as early as the end of the year.
Giant panda cub Fu Bao and her mother Ai Bao lie together at the theme park Everland in Yongin, Gyeonggi-do Province.
