A study has found that Korea has the lowest cancer mortality rate per 100,000 people among 22 high-income countries.

The Yale School of Medicine and Vassar College on May 27 uploaded on the JAMA Health Forum a research paper titled "Comparison of Cancer-Related Spending and Mortality Rates in the U.S. vs. 21 High-Income Countries." 

Conducted between Sept. 1 last year and March 31 this year, the study analyzed and compared the costs of health care and cancer treatment and cancer mortality rates among the 22 countries, including the U.S., the U.K. and Japan. 

The surveyed nations had a median age-standardized mortality rate per 100,000 people of 91.4. Korea had the lowest figure with 75.5, followed by Japan with 81.5. Australia and Switzerland each had 83.3 and Iceland was next with 84.


The U.S. was seventh with 86.3.

Even with smoking reflected, Korea still had the lowest mortality rate from cancer with 50.1, followed by Japan with 55.8 and Switzerland 57.4. Denmark had the highest mortality rate with 85.7, followed by the Netherlands with 85.6.

Korea also had the lowest health care cost per capita with USD 2,600 (KRW 3.22 million), followed by Spain with USD 2,701 (KRW 3.35 million) and Italy USD 2,911 (KRW 3.61 million).

The average health care cost per capita among the 22 countries was USD 5,386.3 (KRW 6.68 million).

Korea also had the eighth-lowest cost of cancer treatment per capita with USD 250 (KRW 310,000). Spain had the lowest with USD 132 (KRW 160,000) while the U.S. had the highest with USD 584 (KRW 720,000).
