The Korea Copyright Protection Agency (KCOPA) and Motion Picture Association (MPA) of the U.S. on July 3 concluded a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on cooperation in protection of international copyrights at a signing ceremony held at the National Museum of Korea in Seoul's Yongsan-gu District.
The MOU stipulates bilateral exchange of information to prevent digital piracy; hosting of joint events to prevent copyright violations; bilateral meetings to discuss infringement trends and solutions; and mutual efforts to raise awareness of copyright protection.
MPA members include leading American companies in content production and distribution like Walt Disney, Netflix, Universal Studios and Warner Bros. In 2017, the association founded the Alliance for Creativity and Entertainment (ACE), an anti-piracy coalition of 53 member companies, to protect copyrights worldwide.
Karyn Temple, the MPA's senior executive vice president and global general counsel, said the MOU is a declaration of the two organizations' intent to unite and dedicate themselves to responding to copyright violations in the Asia-Pacific region and protecting the intellectual property rights of content creators worldwide.
Protection of intellectual property is crucial for both the MPA and ACE, as copyright violations impede creativity and affect global viewers of movies and TV dramas, she added.
KCOPA President Park Jung-Youl said, "We expect this MOU to offer a symbolic opportunity for KCOPA and the MPA to cooperate in expansion of the response network for copyright violations of Hallyu (Korean Wave) content in not only the Asia-Pacific region but worldwide."
