A Japanese think tank has ranked Seoul the world's sixth most competitive city.

The list released on Dec. 17 placed the capital sixth among 48 cities in the Global Power City Index of the Institute for Urban Strategies under Japan's Mori Memorial Foundation.

The capital in 2017 placed sixth in the survey, fell to eighth in 2020 and went back up last year to sixth, where it stayed this year.

The institute gauges a city's competitiveness in six categories: economy, research and development (R&D), cultural interaction, livability, environment, and accessibility. Seoul this year ranked 16th in economy; fifth in R&D; 12th in cultural interaction; 25th in livability; 11th in environment; and 11th in accessibility.

London topped the rankings, followed by Tokyo, New York, Paris and Singapore in the top five. Amsterdam was seventh, Shanghai eighth, Dubai (United Arab Emirates) ninth and Berlin 10th.
