South Korean archers pose for a photo after Ku Bon-chan (second from R) won gold in the men's individual archery competition at the 31st Summer Olympic Games at Sambodromo in Rio de Janeiro on Aug. 12, 2016. Ku's victory gave South Korea gold medals in each of the four archery disciplines at the Rio Games -- men's and women's team and men's and women's individual. No country has ever swept up four archery titles at a single Olympics since the competition expanded to four events in 1988. President Park Geun-hye on Saturday congratulated South Korea's unprecedented archery gold medal sweep at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics.
Ku Bon-chan claimed the gold medal in the men's individual event on Friday, giving South Korea gold medals in all four events - both the individual and team events for men and women.
As dominant as South Korea has been in Olympic archery -- with the all-time leading 23 gold medals -- it has never won four gold medals at a single Olympics in the discipline.
"Ku overcame a huge burden with the faith that he could do it and calmly made his shots," Park wrote in a congratulatory letter to the archer, praising Ku and the other archers' sweeping record as honorable.
Park also sent another congratulatory letter to shooter Kim Jong-hyun who grabbed the silver medal at the men's 50m rifle prone final Friday.
