South Korean rhythmic gymnast Son Yeon-jae said Friday she was choked up with emotions after clinching a spot in her second straight Olympic all-around final.

Son scored 71.956 points total from ball, hoop, ribbon and clubs at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics, to finish fifth among 10 qualifiers for the individual all-around final.

She will try to become the first South Korean medalist in rhythmic gymnastics on Saturday.

"I was quite nervous at the beginning," she said. "While training for the Olympics, I felt more pressure than before to post good results. I got emotional after it was all over."

Son finished fifth at the London Olympic final four years ago. She said she's more mature both as a person and an athlete.

"In London, I didn't know what I was doing, but I've grown up so much now," she said. "I am grateful for that."

Son made mistakes in her ribbon and hoop programs, but said she's looking forward to starting with clean slates in Saturday's final.

"I hope the final will be the opportunity for me to show everything I've worked for," she added.

Despite her miscues, Son said she was "pleased" with her performance because she knows she gave her very best.

As for the less-than-generous judging, Son said, "I tried my best not to look at the scores."

"I don't think I'll be able to enjoy myself in the final," she added. "I am going to persevere and never give up. Tomorrow will be a new day, and I am going to try to hold myself together mentally."
