The Russian men’s national ice hockey team, rated second in the world, trained in Gangneung, one of the host cities for the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, from March 16 to 20.
A total of 25 athletes on the Russian team trained at the Gangneung Hockey Center and checked the quality of the ice. The team also won both of the friendly matches on March 18 and 19 with the Korean national team.
A friendly match takes place between the Russian (red) and Korean national ice hockey teams at the Gangneung Hockey Center in Gangneung, Gangwon-do Province, on March 19.
“The quality of the ice isn't great. We noticed that at training,” said Russian team forward Anatoly Golyshev. “The stadium is nice. Olympians will enjoy playing in it.”
“Russia has always been a powerful team,” said the Russian team head coach Oleg Bratash. “It's our goal to win at next year’s PyeongChang Olympics and I'm sure we'll show great results.”
He also pointed out some of the enhancements to be made at the stadium. “It would be nicer if the shower and toilets were connected to the locker room, and if 30 to 40 athletes could use the facilities without waiting," he said.
He advised that “meticulous maintenance is needed to keep the ice from melting during the break.”
The Russian national ice hockey team flew to Korea on March 16 to train at the Gangneung Hockey Center, where the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games will take place next year.
The Russian national team was invited to Gangneung by the Korea Tourism Organization. The organization also invited Russian media along with the athletes to report on the Russian national team’s training at the Gangneung Hockey Center, as well as to promote Korea's major tourist attracts among Russian viewers.
