By
Kim Hyelin and
Hahm Hee-eunA day before the closing of the Asian Games 2018 Jakarta-Palembang, Korea defeated its rival Japan multiple times in gold medal matches, including baseball and soccer.
The men’s football team, led by head coach Kim Hak Bum, finally defeated Japan 2-1 after a long 120-minute final match at the Pakansari Stadium in Cibinong, Bogor, Jawa Barat, Indonesia, on Sept. 1. Lee Seungwoo scored the opening goal at the extended end of the first half, and Hwang Heechan scored a header, confirming Korea’s victory. Team Korea won gold for the second consecutive time now, following the Asian Games 2014 in Incheon.
The men’s baseball team defeated Japan 3-0 in the gold medal match at the Gelora Bung Karno (GBK) Stadium in Jakarta. This is the third consecutive time that Korea won gold in men’s baseball since the Asian Games 2010 in Guangzhou.
The men’s soft tennis team also defeated Japan 2-0 in that final match to win gold.
The women’s unified Korean team lost to China 71-65 in the gold medal match, but they still received a meaningful silver medal for the two Koreas. The unified Korean team went beyond the wall of separation that divides the peninsula, and shared the joys and sorrows together to go home with the silver medal. This is the first medal in a ball sport for the unified Korea team at an international sports tournament.
Oh Yeonji also won Korea’s first gold medal in women’s boxing at the Asian Games.
Just a day before the end of 2018 Asian Games, Korea received 49 gold medals, 57 silver medals and 70 bronze medals, and made in third place on the medals table at the 2018 Asian Games.
