Badminton star An Se Young has clinched the gold medal in women's singles at the Paris Summer Olympics.

She defeated on Aug. 5 China's He Bingzhao, 2-0 (21-13, 21-16), in the final at the Porte de La Chapelle Arena in Paris.

An is the first Korean woman to win an Olympic badminton singles title in 28 years since Bang Su-Hyeon at the 1996 Atlanta Games.

The win was also Korea's first gold in the sport in 16 years since the one earned by the mixed doubles team of Lee Yong Dae and Lee Hyo Jung at the 2008 Beijing Games.

In shooting, Cho Yeongjae, who advanced to the final of the men's 25-m rapid fire pistol at the Chateauroux Shooting Centre in Chateauroux, won the silver with 25 points.

He is the first Korean to claim an Olympic medal in the rapid fire pistol event.

His victory enabled Korea's best Olympic performance in the sport with three golds and three silvers.

As of the morning of Aug. 6 Korean Standard Time, Korea ranked sixth in the overall medal standings with 11 gold, eight silver and seven bronze.

Cho Yeongjae on Aug. 5 shows his silver medal in the 25-m rapid fire event at the Chateauroux Shooting Centre in Chateauroux, France.
