Swimmer Kim Youngbeom on Sept. 21 flashes his gold medal in the men's 50-m freestyle at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games in Japan (Kim's Instagram account)

Kim Youngbeom on Sept. 21 scored the country's first gold medal in swimming at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games in Japan by setting a tournament record in the men's 50-m freestyle.

In addition, Korea added eight bronze on the second day of the competition.

Kim touched the pad first with a time of 21.66 seconds at Tokyo Aquatics Centre, while compatriot Ji Yuchan took the bronze (21.94).

The men's swimming team of Kim Junwoo, Kim Woomin, Lee Hojoon and Hwang Sunwoo earned the bronze in the 800-m freestyle relay with a time of 7:06.76, missing a second consecutive title in the competition. Yoon Jihwan placed third in the men's 50-m backstroke and Kim Seungwon the same in the women's 50-m backstroke.

In shooting, Park Hajun, Shin Minki and Kwon Hyupjun earned the team bronze in the men's 10-m air rifle. Ahn Hyeon-gi took third in the men's combined wushu event of taijiquan and taijijian, while Lee Bomi also won a bronze in the women's mixed martial arts in the 54-kg class.

In soft tennis, the mixed doubles pair of Park Jaekyu and Kim Yeon-hwa won the bronze.

As of Sept. 21 at 6:40 p.m., Korea won 23 medals -- five gold, three silver and 15 bronze -- to stay third in overall medals behind China and Japan.
