Forestry experts from Korea and Myanmar met on April 8 to boost cooperation in the forestry sector.

The meeting was held at the Government Complex in Daejeon and was part of the 8th Korea-Myanmar Forestry Cooperative Committee.

Delegates from the Myanmar Ministry of Environmental Conservation and Forestry and the Korea Forest Service (KFS) attended the bilateral discussion, including Myanmar Forestry Minister Win Tun and KFS Minister Shin Won-sop.


The participating officials discussed a wide range of agenda items. They agreed to conduct joint research into and cooperate on the preservation of native plants growing in both countries, to work on enhancing human resources in the forestry field, to jointly carry out a pilot project on Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+), which will help to counter climate change, and, lastly, to work on cooperative projects with the help of the ASEAN-Korea Forest Cooperation (AFoCO) board and the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA).

In addition, both sides agreed to sign an MOU this year on forestry investment and to cooperate on climate change.


The KFS expects the Korea-Myanmar agreement to help further expand economic activity in the 50 percent of Myanmar territory that consists of forests.

“We will continue to cooperate with our Myanmar counterparts to implement each of the deals agreed upon today,” said the KFS minister.


Korea established diplomatic relations with Myanmar in 1975. The two nations struck an agreement on forestry cooperation in 1999 and since then have been actively engaged in various efforts to cooperate on the forestry industry.
