President Park Geun-hye discussed the Korea-European Union (EU) relationship and major international issues with Catherine Ashton, high representative of the union for foreign affairs and security policy of the European Commission, in Seoul on May 23.

"I heard that Ashton, as high representative of the EU, with excellent negotiation skills, contributed much to resolving global issues, including the civil war in Syria and the non-proliferation negotiations with Iran," said President Park during the meeting at Cheong Wa Dae.

Speaking of the Framework Participation Agreement on Crisis Management Operations which will be signed between Korea and the EU later in the visit, President Park said, "Ashton has signed the Korea-EU free trade agreement and the Korea-EU Framework Agreement and is going to ink the Framework Participation Agreement on Crisis Management Operations, the three major agreements between Korea and the EU."

"High Representative Ashton will become a witness of the development of Korea-EU ties. I hope that she continues this bond with Korea and contributes with much interest to further the Korea-EU relationship," the president added.
