Korea will share its expertise and experience with plant quarantine technology and systems with eight ASEAN countries.

The Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency (APQA) of Korea has been conducting a training program from May 18 to 31 for 16 experts and officials in charge of plant quarantine in eight ASEAN countries. The participating countries are Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam and the Philippines.

The program includes lectures and field practice for plant quarantine systems, how to internationally cooperate on plant quarantines, the disinfection process of imported plants and how to manage quarantines for exports.

For this year’s program, the Korean quarantine authorities invited Sonya Hammons, program officer for capacity building at the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) Secretariat, to give a special workshop related to pilot projects in the IPPC manual.

The APQA said it, “will cooperate with international organizations related to plant quarantine, such as the IPPC, and actively provide support programs.”

One of the staff members running the program said, “Participants are eager to learn about advanced quarantine technology at the workshop. They are so satisfied with the program that some of them even come twice or three times for the program.”

The APQA has been conducting the workshops since 2006 as part of the Korean government's official development assistance (ODA) program. Over the years, the workshops have been attended by 234 experts or officers in the plant quarantine sector from all around the globe, including Ghana, Egypt, Australia, China, Uzbekistan and Argentina, as well as ASEAN countries.
