Korea has shared its tree-planting expertise and forestry practices with Asian and African countries.

From May 26 to June 2, the Korea Forest Service (KFS) hosted an invitational training program, the Forest Management Capacity Building Program, for 12 officials in charge of forest affairs from four countries: Benin, Laos, Myanmar and Indonesia.

Program participants shared their expertise and experiences in protecting the forests and in afforestation. They also received training on ways to boost the income of the forestry sector through the complex management of forests for multiple uses, on theories and practices of afforestation and on restoration projects in mountainous areas.

Reflecting the requests of the participating countries, the program was tailored to include a session on tree-sampling cultivation technology, as requested by the Benin government, and a training workshop for forestry experts, as requested by the governments of Laos, Myanmar and Indonesia.

One of the staff members running the training program said, “Participants consider the program to be very useful and they feel that it offers them opportunities to gather more information and to learn about new technologies in the forest management sector. They hope this program can be held every year and lead to opportunities for extended overseas development assistance (ODA) projects in the forestry sector between Korea and their home country.”

The KFS said, “We hope this training program can help build the foundation for many countries which aim to achieve both forest 'greenification' and economic development, and further contribute to strengthening international cooperation in the forestry sector.”
