“I received your warm welcome when I visited Lisbon three years ago. I am glad to see you again in Seoul. I still remember the beautiful view of the Fatima Shrine and have fond memories of Portugal. I am aware that this is the first official visit to Korea by a Portuguese leader. I believe your Korea visit will greatly contribute to strengthening the bilateral relationship between Korea and Portugal,” said President Park Geun-hye to Portuguese President Aníbal António Cavaco Silva.

“I think the signing of the memoranda of understanding (MOU) to cooperate on renewable energy and to promote tourism between the two countries holds significance in this regard. I hope today’s summit talks will bring mutually beneficial results to both countries as we discuss measures to substantially bolster cooperation,” President Park added.

“The relationship between Portugal and Korea traces back to the early 16th century. In modern times, more than 50 years have passed since the two countries established diplomatic relations. I met President Park in Portugal a few years ago when she visited us as a presidential envoy. I cherish the memory of meeting President Park at that time. I would also like to express my deep condolences to Korea for the tragic sinking of the ferry Sewol. I would like to express my deep condolences and sympathy for the agony endured by the Korean people because of this tragic accident,” said Portuguese President Aníbal António Cavaco Silva, responding to President Park’s remarks.
