Participants in the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) Plenipotentiary Conference, currently underway in Busan, have adopted as a resolution the Korea-led agenda concerning the Internet of Things (IoT).
Chairman of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) Plenipotentiary Conference 2014 Min Wonki presides over a session of the conference in Busan.
The Ministry of Science, ICT & Future Planning announced on November 3 that the IoT agenda had been adopted for the first time by the ITU members at the plenary session. It added that ITU member-countries will begin to carry out IoT-related projects as the conference has now adopted the agenda.
Korea, the host of this year's ITU conference, suggested in the agenda that ITU member-countries should discuss, "facilitating the Internet of Things to prepare for a globally connected world." Their aim is to raise awareness of the IoT and strengthen the role of the ITU in developing IoT-related industries, as the IoT will be the core element of a future hyper-connected society.
In the agenda, Korea urged other countries to consider the fact that the IoT will be used widely across many areas ranging from energy, transport, healthcare, agriculture, disaster control, home networking, information communications technology (ICT) and even to non-ICT sectors. Seoul also suggested that the ITU and the International Organization for Standards (ISO) need to consider a global IoT standard and introduce related technologies, such as Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) and ubiquitous IPv6 (Internet Protocol Version 6). Korea also urged the world to cooperate on the early introduction and promotion of the IoT and develop international standards in order to contribute to achieving the goals of the organization's post-2015 agenda.
Korea proposed the agenda this August as a joint resolution in the Asia-Pacific region. The working group at the conference agreed to introduce the agenda at the plenary session. The ITU has now adopted the agenda as a resolution.
This is the first time Korea proposed a specific agenda at the conference since joining the ITU in 1952. The adopted IoT agenda will help Korea bolster its influence in standardizing technology and global policies related to the IoT.
