A foundation to commercialize the Internet of Things (IoT), one of the future's key information technologies, has now been established.
On December 16, the Korea Electronics Technology Institute and some 50 companies, including Posco ICT and Cisco Systems, launched the Open Alliance for IoT Standard (OCEAN) to help form an ecosystem for the IoT industry to grow based on international standards. At the OCEAN launch ceremony, held at the COEX convention center in southern Seoul, they unveiled open source software for terminals and service platforms that had been developed based on international standards.
The OCEAN was launched in order to promote cooperation between businesses by utilizing international standards and technologies. With the launch of the alliance, its members can now download IoT open source software based on oneM2M and can utilize it for various services. This will also help with the commercialization of new platforms. OneM2M is an association established in July 2012 by state institutions responsible for standardization in North America, Europe, Korea, China and Japan to promote international standards in relation to the IoT.
To quickly realize IoT services, there needs to be an ecosystem in place so that users and developers can actively participate and share their technologies, organizers said. The OCEAN is expected to provide such a foundation.
"The IoT platform and the OCEAN will be able to provide companies and young entrepreneurs with new business models," said a Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning official. "There will be an ecosystem for co-existence among platform developers and communications, mobile handsets and software developers, to realize the IoT based on open source software."
