The Korean government has made a formal condolence call and sent a delegation composed of high-profile officials to honor the late King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia who passed away on January 23.

The Korean government’s delegation expressed its condolences while attending a group mourning which took place at the King Abdullah Palace in Saudi Arabia on January 26. The delegation was headed by Deputy Prime Minister & Minister of Education Hwang Woo-yea.

President Park Geun-hye gave a condolence call to King Salman of Saudi Arabia last week to express her regrets over the passing of the late King Abdullah. In the message, President Park expressed her deep condolences to the people of Saudi Arabia and to King Salman over the passing of the late king. She commented that Saudi Arabia achieved political stability and economic prosperity during King Abdullah’s reign. She comforted Saudi Arabian citizens by saying that the late king’s contribution to greatly developing the Korea-Saudi relationship during his reign will never be forgotten.

Minister of the National Guard Miteb bin Abdullah, who received the delegation on behalf of the bereaved family, appreciated the Korean government for sending the delegation. He asked that the delegation deliver the gratitude of the Saudi Arabian government to President Park.

In this regard, Minister of Foreign Affairs Yun Byung-se visited the Saudi Arabian Embassy in Seoul on January 26 where he left a message of condolences in the funeral guest book. During a meeting with Saudi Arabian Ambassador Ahmad Al-Barrak, Minister Yun highly praised the late king by saying that King Abdullah made a remarkable contribution to the security of the country, both in and outside the nation, to prosperity and to the development of the Korea-Saudi Arabia relationship, as well.

The Saudi Arabian ambassador expressed his gratitude for Minister Yun's shared mourning.
