President Park Geun-hye, currently in Kuwait on a four-state visit to the Middle East, visited the Sheikh Jaber Causeway construction site on March 2.

The Sheikh Jaber Causeway, set to be completed at the end of 2018, is 48-kilometers long and will become one of the world's longest bridges. It's being built by Hyundai and GS Engineering & Construction Corp. The new span will shorten the distance and time needed to cross between Kuwait City and the new Madinat al-Hareer, or "Silk City," development. With the construction of the marine bridge, the 80 kilometers between the two cities will be reduced to 36.14 kilometers, enabling a travel time of some 20 minutes, down from 70 minutes. The construction of the Main Causeway, a 36-kilometer linkage, is the responsibility of Hyundai while the Doha Link, which links to the Doha Motorway, is being built by GS.

President Park met with engineers on-site and discussed the progress of the project. She said that this is a meaningful year because it marks the 50th anniversary of Korea's first overseas construction projects, from which Korea will earn some USD 700 billion this year.

President Park noted that the emir of Kuwait, Sabah al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah, mentioned during their summit that Koreans tend to successfully complete whatever projects they take on. She continued to say that she was very proud of them.

In the afternoon, she attended a Korea-Kuwait business forum held at the Bayan Palace. She stressed that the two countries need to take new steps forward in their bilateral economic relationship, in accordance with current plans and directions.

President Park suggested that, in the future, the two nations could work together to enhance cooperation on logistics infrastructure in Kuwait, change the cooperative partnership in the energy sector into a reciprocal cooperative partnership, promote private investment and give economic support to the public sector.

During the forum, some 28 companies succeeded in signing business deals worth a total of USD 135 million, including plans to establish a kid-themed café at a large shopping center.
