President Park Geun-hye attended a ceremony to mark the joint production of Korea's trainer airplanes at a private aviation school at the Las Palmas Air Base in Lima on April 21, the last stop during her visit to Peru. Peruvian President Ollanta Humala accompanied President Park and examined the KT-1P trainer plane assembly line.

The ceremony was held to commemorate the first joint production of the KT-1P trainer plane in Peru and its virgin flight. It was produced by the Peruvian government and Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI).

Korea signed a USD 210 million deal with the Peruvian government in November 2012 to export four KT-1P aircrafts and to jointly manufacture 16 additional planes in Peru. The KAI completed the delivery of the four KT-1P aircrafts in December 2014 by disassembling the airplanes produced in Korea and reassembling them in Peru. This time, the two nations jointly manufactured the fifth KT-1P aircraft, outsourcing the production.

During the ceremony, the five aircrafts flew in formation overhead. An additional five aircrafts will be manufactured by October, and ten more units will be assembled by October 2016.

"The trainer planes jointly produced over the past two years soared across the sky over Las Palmas, carrying the dreams of the Peruvian aerospace industry and showing the willingness of bilateral cooperation between the two nations," said President Park in her commemorative speech, delivering words of encouragement. "Today's achievements were achieved through everyone's sweat and passion."

"The joint production is an important milestone that will realize Peruvians' dreams for their aerospace industry as it makes a leap forward and is a symbol of the future-oriented cooperation that is being pursued by both countries," said President Park. "This meaningful event will be the foundation to continuously develop the Peruvian aerospace industry and it will be a monument to further solidify our bilateral, comprehensive, strategic partnership."

After the flight, President Park presented 10 participating pilots, including two Peruvian pilots who boarded the fifth aircraft, with red scarves, the symbol of the air force. The two pilots trained in Korea over six months last year under the guidance of the Korea Air Force.

"I hope that our bilateral technological cooperation will go beyond the current basic trainer planes to include the supersonic multipurpose advanced trainer jet," said Peruvian President Humala. According to Cheong Wa Dae, his remarks show the bright prospects for Korea's intended exports of its multipurpose advanced FA-50 trainer jet to Peru.

"I agree with Peru's plan," said President Park. "The current cooperation between Korea and Peru will be the cornerstone for Korea's entry into the South American aerospace market in the future."
