President Park Geun-hye, currently visiting Chile, highlighted the need to enhance assembly-level cooperation and exchange between Korea and Chile and the role of legislators.
The president visited the Former Congress National Building on April 22 (local time in Chile) to meet President of the Senate of Chile Patricio Walker and President of the Chamber of Deputies of Chile Marco Nuñez. President Park praised their leadership and the role of the Chilean Congress, acknowledging the fundamental role it played in Chile's democratization process.
During the meeting with the Chilean legislative leaders, she mentioned her Korea-Chile summit with Chilean President Michelle Bachelet earlier that day, at which both leaders agreed to broaden bilateral cooperation beyond the existing sectors of economy and trade. She urged the two leaders to take interest in the agreement and provide support at the assembly level so that the two countries can produce a concrete outcome.

“Korea and Chile share human values such as democracy and market economy," said President Park. "I hope the legislators of both countries can fully follow these values, and cooperation and exchange can increase between lawmakers of Korea and Chile.”
In response, both Chilean congress leaders pledged their active support on the legislative level to help extend bilateral cooperation. They highly valued the Korea-Chile free trade agreement (FTA), saying that the free trade pact remarkably contributed to boosting the economic cooperation and overall relationship between the two countries. They also expressed hope that both countries can continue expanding the scope of cooperation in the future.
