President Park welcomed Seoul’s hosting of the Korea-Japan Business Conference, as this year marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of modern diplomatic relations between Korea and Japan.
She then expressed her gratitude to the association for working together so that the annual conference would not be interrupted for 47 years, despite frequent conflicting issues that might have gotten in the way.
In response, Chairman Mikio Sasaki of the Japan-Korea Economic Association said, “This continuation has made great contributions to bilateral economic relations.” The chairman then introduced what would be up for discussion during this year’s Seoul conference: to enhance bilateral economic ties, to increase human-to-human interactions and, lastly, to expand cultural exchanges.
Agreeing on the need to expand bilateral cooperation in the three areas, President Park stressed that the two countries will strive to develop economic ties and to promote friendship by carrying out many joint projects and conferences to be held in honor of the 50th anniversary of the normalization of modern diplomatic relations.
In particular, she emphasized that, “In the process of the discussion involving the Korea-China-Japan FTA, as well as the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), Korea and Japan will maintain a close, sound alliance.”

In addition, pointing out a recent decline in bilateral trade that has risen by more than 400 times over the past 50 years, President Park urged businesses to, “Expand the current array of imports, which focuses on intermediate goods, to include consumer goods and end goods as well, pursing an increase in trade.”
