Korea and eight Asian and African nations have joined hands to share their weather forecasting techniques.

The Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) is running the International Training Course on Weather Forecasting for Operational Meteorologists in Seoul from June 8 to June 26. The course is targeted at weather specialists from Cambodia, Laos, Mongolia, Myanmar, Uzbekistan, Vietnam, Ethiopia and Qatar.

Unusual weather conditions are occurring more and more frequently and severe climate damage is increasing due to global warming, leading to a rise in social and economic costs. In particular, Asia and African nations are more prone to climate-related natural disasters, such as typhoons and torrential downpours, than other regions. However, many countries on the continents do not have a proper weather forecasting infrastructure. It is urgent to modernize related technologies and infrastructure in those nations.

The course is designed to improve the capacity of meteorologists in the participating nations and, in turn, to reduce climate-related disasters. Participants in the ongoing course are meteorologists and hydrologists who have over 10 years of experiences in their fields.

The course covers atmospheric dynamics, numerical forecasting, meteorological radar analysis, weather satellites, satellite image analysis and responses to emerging weather conditions. The course is designed to provide information on various channels and services related to weather forecasting marine climate and preventative meteorology, and to help participants design weather forecasting services suitable to their home countries. In addition, they will have a chance to introduce weather forecasting techniques and systems from their home countries and discuss directions for further development and training for meteorologists. They will also have a chance to establish feasible plans applicable to their home countries.
