Prime Minister Hwang Kyo-ahn has reminded people to keep in mind the lessons learned from the Korean War (1950-1953) during a ceremony to mark the 65th anniversary of the start of the war.

"The Korean War is neither a forgotten war nor a war that can be forgotten," said the prime minister.

Prime Minister Hwang was attending a ceremony with some 3,000 people, including Korean War veterans, Seoul-based foreign diplomats from the nations that took part in the war as U.N. forces and other people, at the Jamsil Indoor Stadium in southeastern Seoul on June 25.

"The Korean War started with North Korea's invasion and it is neither a forgotten war nor a war that can be forgotten," said Hwang. "The roaring of the guns of war stopped and over 60 years have passed, but the instability in our security on the Korean Peninsula still continues."

"We should not forget the lesson that without strong security, the freedom, peace and prosperity we now enjoy could evaporate in one day," said the prime minister. "We should concentrate all our strength on solidifying a sense of security and building a strong national defense system."

With regard to the inter-Korea relationship, Hwang said, "The government has taken stern actions against North Korea's threat and it has also formed the Presidential Committee for Unification Preparation to prepare for a peaceful reunification in an orderly way. I hope that North Korea will fulfill its role as a responsible member of the international community and walk together for the future of permanent peace on the Korean Peninsula and for the co-prosperity of the Korean people."
