President Park Geun-hye attended a reopening ceremony for the Provisional Government Building of the Republic of Korea in Shanghai on Sept. 4.
During the ceremony, President Park said, “As this year marks the 70th anniversary of Korea’s independence, I believe it is particularly meaningful to attend this reopening ceremony of the building of the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea in Shanghai. I would like to thank the Chinese government for contributing to renovating the building.”
"This reopening shows us that both Korea and China share a historical understanding and value of the remains of Korea’s independence struggle. I will strive to complete the true meaning of liberation by realizing a peaceful unification of Korea,” she said.

The building is one location that Korean independence activists used to house Korea's government in exile since its launch on April 13, 1919. Among all locations that housed the provisional government, this building was used for the longest period of time, from 1926 to 1932.
The existence of this building was identified through an on-going joint research project conducted by the Korean government and the Shanghai government since 1988, to find the historical remnants of the provisional government. It was open to public in April 1993 after undergoing a two-year restoration.
