President Park Geun-hye held a summit meeting with Egypt's President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi in Seoul on March 3.
President Park expressed her gratitude to Egypt for actively contributing to the process of adopting a new resolution against North Korea as a non-permanent member of the U.N. Security Council. She also thanked the Egyptian foreign ministry for issuing a statement condemning the fourth nuclear test and long-range missile launch by Pyongyang.
President el-Sisi said that, “The Egyptian government issued the statement because we considered not only concerns about North Korea’s announcement of a nuclear weapons test but also other concerns that it could pose a new threat to the nuclear non-proliferation structure and escalate tensions on the Korean Peninsula, and raise the possibility of an arms race.”
On the occasion of the Korea-Egypt summit, the two countries adopted a joint declaration. Both governments signed a total of nine memorandums of understanding, including an MOU on USD 3 billion worth of financing for infrastructure development, and cooperation on industry, trade, education, development, judicial affairs and ports.
President el-Sisi told President Park that Egyptians regard Korea as an exemplary country that has made great achievements thanks to collaborative efforts between its citizens and government. He said that Korea and Egypt can have exchanges across a wide range of sectors, including business, education, the arts and history.
President Park emphasized the need for cooperation between Korea and Egypt in the areas of nuclear energy and new energies. She explained to the Egyptian leader in detail a Korean business model for urban development projects that uses environmentally-friendly energy and which the Egyptian government could apply to its new construction projects.
