Park Geun-hye and Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto held summit talks on April 4 at the National Palace in Mexico City. In regard to issues related to the Korean Peninsula, President Pena Nieto said that Mexico will fully implement the U.N. Security Council Resolution and actively cooperate in pressuring North Korea.

The two leaders agreed to extend cooperation at the policy level on the arts and sports. On the occasion of the Korea-Mexico summit, both presidents agreed to bolster cooperation on culture and the creative industries by connecting both countries’ cultural capabilities to industrial development.

The leaders agreed to form a working-level negotiation body for the Korea-Mexico free trade agreement (FTA) and agreed that it should meet by the fourth quarter this year. The two governments signed a total of 34 memorandums of understandings (MOU), including 29 that strengthen economic cooperation.

This latest Korea-Mexico summit has now paved the way for Korean firms to take part in Mexico’s energy sector, worth some USD 17 billion, and in the country’s infrastructure construction projects, which include transport and water resources. Both countries also decided to expand their sectors of bilateral cooperation in a substantial manner, ranging from high value-added sectors, such as the health and medical sectors, and new energy industries to cultural and sport exchanges.

President Park said that the two leaders agreed to diversify their sectors of bilateral cooperation. Both leaders focused particularly on high value-added sectors that are based on the creative industries and will pursue win-win results through cooperation in those areas. .
