Laotian women are increasing their employability in the job market by receiving technical training that uses a Korean curriculum.
The Vocational Training Center for Women in Laos opened in Vientiane this past May, and has been offering training courses in beauty care, sewing, cooking and IT. The center was founded by Korea's Ministry of Gender Equality and Family (MOGEF), in collaboration with the Laotian Women's Union (LWU).
Over the past several months, women in Vientiane have completed a number of classes taught by Korean professionals, to favorable reviews.
The Vocation Training Center for Women in Laos is located in the capital, Vientiane.
Beauticians take a beauty care course at the Vocation Training Center in Laos and try their hand at giving facial scrubs and applying mud packs on their fellow classmates.
"Through the program, I was able to learn how to tailor men's suits, something that's not often taught in Laos," said Dorkkeo Yangyuasy, a student who enrolled in the center's sewing class. "Now that I have this skill under my belt, I would like to pass on this knowledge to women living in other provinces who are having a hard time finding employment. I'm positive that having the proper skills will give the women a leg up in the job market, and help them become financially independent."
Kaithong Hanthavong, a student who took the IT course, said, "I already knew how to use a computer prior to the course, but now I'm much more proficient at Word and Excel. The three-week program will definitely make me stand out in the job market."
Based on the positive feedback, the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family will be taking a more active stance in setting up a management system for the center in Laos, providing increased operational support and training local instructors. The ministry has plans to set up two more vocational centers for women in Laos by 2018.
"It's impressive just how much the vocational center is contributing to the lives of the people there, by providing training, consultation and job matching services," said Bouchanh Syhanath, vice-chairman of the Laotian Women's Union. "We will continue to make efforts for the economic empowerment of women in Laos."
