President Moon Jae-in, in Germany on an official state visit, met with members of a German medical team that was dispatched to Busan in the aftermath of the Korean War (1950-53), in Berlin on July 5.

The president gave a presidential award to Karl Hauser, an engineer who worked alongside the German medical personnel in Busan. In addition to meeting Hauser, the president also got the chance to meet with children and other family members of the German medical team, as well as representatives from the German Red Cross.

The German medical team was dispatched to Busan from May 1954 to March 1959, with around 117 professionals sent to the port city each year. The team treated over 25,000 patients and helped to deliver over 6,000 newborns. The team is credited with educating a number of Korean doctors and nurses and helping to develop the medical sciences in Korea.
