The launch of the PyeongChang Forum for the Earth and its Citizens was proclaimed at United Nation headquarters in New York on Dec. 13 in the presence of some 500 U.N. officials.
"It's particularly meaningful to have this special event here at the United Nations, as the PyeongChang Forum aims to provide a platform for international discourse on the environment and global citizenship, the core values of the United Nations,” said Cho Tae-yul, the Korean ambassador to the U.N.
The PyeongChang Forum for the Earth and its Citizens is part of the legacy of the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games that will be held in Pyeongchang, Gangwon-do Province, next year. Its goal is to provide a forum where people can discuss global issues and find solutions to them, regarding the environment and global citizenship, and to celebrate the Olympic spirit.
Some 1,500 global experts will attend the first session of the PyeongChang Forum, which will be held from Feb. 6 to 8, 2018, before the opening of the PyeongChang 2018 Winter Games, at the Alpensia resort in Pyeongchang-gun County, Gangwon-do Province. They will discuss sustainable solutions in different parts of society, under the theme of “A New Solidarity for the Earth and its Citizens.”
