Korea and the Mekong countries have created an outline for their future cooperation.

President Moon Jae-in and the heads of state from the Mekong river basin held the first Mekong-Republic of Korea Summit in Busan on Nov. 27, and announced the “Mekong-Han River Declaration for Establishing Partnership for People, Prosperity and Peace.”

The declaration specified seven areas of cooperation including culture and tourism, agriculture, infrastructure, IT, sustainable development and security.

The countries will continue the Mekong-ROK cooperation based on the three pillars of people, prosperity and peace, which are also the key pillars of the New Southern Policy.

The Mekong-ROK summit will be held every year on the sidelines of summits related to the Association of Southeast Nations (ASEAN), under co-chairmanship of Korea and one of the Mekong countries.
