"International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies," or "Blue Sky Day" for short, has been officially designated a national commemorative day in Korea as suggested by President Moon Jae-in last year in his keynote address to the United Nations.
The Ministry of Interior and Safety on Aug. 11 said the Cabinet in a meeting passed the revised bill of designating national commemorative days, including a plan to designate Sept. 7 as Blue Sky Day.
The designation aims to boost public awareness of climate change and encourage the people's participation in activities to lower air pollution.
In September last year, President Moon proposed the designation of International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies at the U.N. Climate Action Summit. Three months later in December, the resolution for designating such a day was adopted by the 74th U.N. General Assembly, making this the first U.N. commemorative day led by the Korean government.
The inaugural ceremony for Blue Sky Day is scheduled for Sept. 7 at Nodeulseom Island in Seoul. The government will also work with the U.N. Environment Programme to have the day observed internationally and launch a global campaign for it.
