First lady Kim Jung-sook on Feb. 8 narrated a children's book ahead of Seollal (Lunar New Year).
The charity organization Community Chest of Korea (CCK) released on its website and YouTube a video running 6 1/2 minutes of the first lady, who is also the group's honorary chairperson, reading a story.
She narrated "Son Keun Halmonieui Mandu Mandeulgi" (Making Dumplings with Big-handed Grandma) by writer Chae In-sun (the expression "big hands" in Korean means to cook a lot of food). The story is about an elderly woman known for cooking large portions of food who makes the world's biggest dumpling for Seollal to feed hungry animals in a forest.
Delivering to children a message of sharing happiness, the first lady said, "Like a grandmother with big hands, if children can learn to share by starting with small things, friends will give a big smile as a gift."
Cheong Wa Dae added that her narration of the story was intended to share Seollal's meaning of warm sharing with children on the occasion of the holiday amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
The video will be used as material in an educational program for children and teens on philanthropy at the CCK's so-called sharing interactive center.
