President Moon Jae-in on April 10 expressed his condolences over the death of Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh and the husband of Queen Elizabeth II.

"I extend my heartfelt thoughts on the passing of Prince Philip, who was loved and respected by the people of the United Kingdom," the president wrote on his Facebook page.

"The people of the Republic of Korea and I will forever remember the contribution he made to enhancing friendly ties between the two countries when he visited Korea with Her Majesty The Queen in 1999."

Prince Philip passed away on April 9 at Windsor Castle. He had officially retired from public life in 2017 and would have turned 100 on June 10.

The prince accompanied the queen on her first visit to Korea in 1999, visiting the construction site of Incheon International Airport as well as the Demilitarized Zone.
