Minister of Foreign Affairs Chung Eui-yong on March 2 held a phone conversation with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba on how to support Ukraine, which is in a severe crisis due to its invasion by Russia.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Seoul said its chief exchanged opinions with his Ukrainian counterpart on matters such as Korean humanitarian aid to Ukraine, economic sanctions on Russia and protection of nationals overseas.
Expressing regret over the loss of innocent lives in Ukraine, Minister Chung explained the Korean government's decision to pledge USD 10 million in humanitarian assistance for the Ukrainian government and people.
He added that Seoul will promptly send emergency medical supplies including hazmat suits, first-aid kits, medical gloves and masks, and blankets per Ukraine's request.
Minister Kuleba shared the situation in his nation and thanked Korea by saying, "We will never forget the solidarity and support shown by the Korean government and people in difficult times."
Minister Chung reaffirmed his government's position to condemn Russia's invasion of Ukraine and support Ukrainian efforts for peaceful resolution of the situation.
He added that Seoul will actively join international sanctions on Russia, especially in export controls and finance, and hailed the Ukrainian people for not losing courage and showing unity despite their difficult situation.
Both ministers also pledged close cooperation to secure the safety of the two countries' nationals residing in each other's nation.
With this year marking the 30th anniversary of diplomatic ties, Seoul and Kyiv agreed to hold close communication to peacefully resolve the situation as mature partners and reinforce mutual exchange and cooperation by a level after things settle down.
